Integrated water management in rural areas involving water supply and sanitation, and agricultural water use
Main objectives and aims
Based on the integrated approach to water management in rural areas, the overall aim is to achieve high quality of service and sustainable system operation and water use in both domestic and agricultural water services. Following objectives can be derived from this overall aim:
Determination of deficiencies in current status
• quality and quantity of available water sources
• current status of administration and organisation of water services
• agricultural and domestic water use
Development of management plans for rural areas
• development of criteria for technical, economic and ecological sustainability
• suggestions for management plans for water services (infrastructure maintenance, demand management, distribution of competencies)
• suggestions for optimised irrigation scheduling
Know how exchange
• know how exchange and discussions between the partners on country specific practices, experiences and regulations
• joint development of criteria and principles for management plans
Brief description of the activities
Desk studies
Each partner will carry out desk studies and prepare presentations for the workshops. The desk studies aim to
• summarise the current status, deficiencies and potentials
• prepare objectives and criteria for the development of water services and management plans
• suggest strategies for optimised irrigation scheduling Joint workshops There will be at least 3 workshops, one at each of the three partner institutions.
The workshops will be structured as follows:
• Workshop 1: presentation and discussion of current status, deficiencies and potentials based on the desk studies and SWOT analyses
• Workshop 2: discussion and definition of objectives and criteria for the development of water infrastructure taking into account both domestic water services and irrigation
• Workshop 3: suggestions for management plans und implementation of institutional and technical measures
