Computer technologies are a primary factor causing the rapid evolution of the technical sciences during the last decades. Conversely, this evolution is characterized by increasing demands for computational power which fairly exceeds the resources of the individual scientific organizations. In this respect the European development roadmap poses ambitious standards for the information society. The
establishment of the next generation Internet based on the concept for Grid computing requires scientific cooperation where international and regional aspects interlace. The spread of the Grid infrastructure requires strong international collaboration which to foster the networking on a regional level. In the Balkan region the University of Pristina and in particular the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Kosovska Mitrovica (FTS-UT-K.M.) are surrounded by scientific organizations which actively participate in the European Grid initiatives.
Main objectives and aims of the project GRINKO are to provide specific support actions to assist the establishment of the pilot Grid centre in the Faculty of Technical Sciences (K. Mitrovica), University of Pristina (FTS-UP-K.M). The envisaged training, dissemination and collaboration activities aim to provide the knowledge and ability to
use the Grid infrastructure for solving of computationally demanding problems in the field of Technical Sciences. The computer experts comprising the Kosovo team will acquire knowledge to provide Grid support to the electrical engineering, electronic and other local scientific communities with requirements for high performance computing power, as for example are these from ecology and geophysics. The Kosovo partners become the core group working for the enlargement of local Grid infrastructure, attracting more users and applications.
Aim of the project is to establish scientific cooperation and human networking between the Austrian, target Kosovar and South Eastern European groups, involved in the project. Grid computing facilitates collaborative development of applications and sharing of scientific results. The dissemination and training strategy will allow the spreading of knowledge towards other interested communities. A local core group of adapted experts in Grid computing and system administration is necessary to develop the local Grid society, to train and support the local scientific communities in utilization of the Grid infrastructure as well as to maintain the contact with the regional and international Grid partners. The envisaged activities can be considered as first steps towards association of the scientific potential in the regional and European Grid initiatives.
