Influence of the environment on the quality of peppers and tomatoes in Kosovo and Monte Negro

Start Date: 1 May 2008

Project duration: 9 Months

Summary:
Impact of environment in quality of peppers and tomato fruits is generally very high. In Kosovo as well in Monte Negro is cultivation of peppers and tomatoes important from economic aspect and also from consumption aspect. Agriculture plays an important role in economic development of Montenegro, since agriculture contributes more then 10% to GDP, whereas the vegetable production in Kosovo is one of the most important branches of agricultural production and even though in some regions it is a main economical activity.

The organized production of peppers and tomatoes from where one part of Prishtina market is supplied is located in region of Plant Power in Obiliq (situated northwest of Kosovo). Gases that are released from coal burning (for energy production) are potential polluters not only for environment but for plants growing around e further for human health.

Dust, NO2, NH3, SO2, and Ozone have been shown to decrease ascorbic acid, beta-carotene and B complex vitamins in numerous fruits and vegetables.

Till now we do not have any study related to level of pollution of production for this plants from Plant Power and their effect in quality of peppers and tomatoes neither in Kosovo or in Monte Negro, therefore studying this problem would of high interest for the both countries.

Except for scientific research that will be realized, as result we will have first time scientific cooperation (share of experience, use of research methods), new opportunities, for continuous collaboration in scientific and educational and professor level between Agriculture Faculty in Prishtina, in Monte Negro and Agricultural University in Vienna.
